Part 1 : Kentucky Sustainable Living Homesteading & Preparedness Festival

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

This past weekend (March 23-24, 2024) we attended the second Kentucky Sustainable Living Homesteading & Preparedness Festival. They have speakers that talk about different aspects of homesteading and preparedness. My mom and a family friend are the ones that put this event on. It is a great time for everyone. Not only do you get to learn about homesteading, but there are a lot of vendors that set up to sell handmade items. They have activities for kids too, so our kids love going to this event every year. They hold the festivals in the spring and fall. So if you didn’t make it for the Spring festival don’t worry there is another coming soon!  You can check out their website at https://kentuckysustainableliving.com/.

A couple of the speakers that piqued my interest were:

William Bond The Permaculture Consultant

William spoke on Homesteading the Permaculture Way & Soil Health. Because we live on a small piece of land, we have limited space for animals.  William talked to us about ways to utilize our space to grow a garden to feed us and our animals. You can watch his videos at https://www.youtube.com/@ThePermacultureConsultant.

Lawrence McCoy

Lawrence taught how to make homemade apple cider vinegar.  AVC is great for our health and for animals’ health. Lawrence focuses on learning a skill then becoming proficient at it.  He teaches to learn one thing at a time so you don’t have to purchase that item at the store anymore.  He has a Facebook group you can check out called Being Prepared. Here is the link https://www.facebook.com/groups/1128553701314572

Sean Tario

Sean spoke about digital privacy and how to “unplug from the matrix.”  My husband and I really took this in. With our three children digital privacy is very important to us. You can check out his company at https://mark37.com/

Amanda Blount

Amanda spoke on how to grow your own food even if you have a small space.  Regretfully I missed her session at the festival but I have been following her on Instagram (@therealamandablount) and she has TONS of great information there.  She is also very knowledgeable in grant writing and loves helping folks with that.

My husband & I have the privilege of joining the KSL Team and helping to organize future events. We are so excited for the Fall Festival. Like I have said in one of my other posts our property is less than an acre, so our homestead isn’t large scale. But at this festival there are so many speakers that speak about different ways to homestead. You don’t have to have a big piece of land to have a homestead. You can live in an apartment and grow a garden in a pot on your window sill. Homesteading is about taking care of your family and not relying on the system for your needs.
